Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of world’s oldest medical systems that dates back to the 21st century B.C and is still widely practiced to-day. It is a unique and independent medical system which originated in China. It has developed over centuries and is imbued with the spirit of Chinese civilisation and culture. For thousands of years  it has played a major role in maintaining the health of Chinese people. In the intervening years since then it has been painstakingly researched and extensively practiced. TCM is the oldest, safest and most natural form of medical care, aiming at treatment for the whole body rather than just the symptoms.

Any medical system does not survive this long unless it is effective, so what are its strengths?

Herbal Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine sees health as a balance in the body of the two opposing and complementary forces of Yin and Yang, which provides a harmonious and correct flow of QI (vital energy). When this balance is disturbed by poor diet, lifestyle or environment etc., then the flow of QI is blocked or becomes deficient. This manifests itself as the symptoms of disease. Different techniques are applied to correct imbalance and strengthen the immune system, so that the patient is not only symptom free but is healthy and full of vitality.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, diagnosis is based upon how a person reacts to the causes of disease. For example, a flu virus may cause fever and sore throat in one person, while in another it may cause shivers and body aches. Because diagnosis is based on ‘weaving’ all the symptoms into a pattern of how that person interacts with pathogens and the environment.

Traditional Chinese medicine can treat conditions that don’t necessarily fall into a particular ‘disease category’. Many people have unnatural fatigue or other vague disorders which are difficult to diagnose in western medicine. They can be diagnosed and treated using  Traditional Chinese Medicine.  The whole spectrum of physical through emotional factors is assessed in diagnosis and treatment. Treatment is based on the principle that good health is the natural state.

TCM treatment aims to activate the innate healing ability of the body and mind, not necessarily to ‘attack’ a disease.  Although the treatment can be aimed at relieving symptoms, Chinese Medicine always focuses on treating the ‘root’ of the illness.

The two basic components used in Traditional Chinese medicine are Acupuncture Therapy and Herbal Medicine Therapy.
